Testimony

Wow, tons of e-mails and comments about "Elder Packer's" testimony.

I took it off.

I took it off because I was receiving threatening e-mails and comments. Part of me, probably the PMS-ing part, wanted to leave it up and say "DEAL WITH IT!" But that is completely the wrong reason to post something like that.

If you'd like a copy of the words that were inspiring, and may or may not have been spoken by President Packer...go ahead and post your e-mail address, and I just won't publish the comment. I'm really sorry to have removed it for those of you who felt the same confirming Spirit I did, and who relished in the comforting thoughts.

Really, very sorry. And please feel safe to leave your e-mail in my comment box, I won't publish it, or give it out.

It's good that you took it off, and I'll tell you why:

I'm always doubtful whenever I receive anything forwarded in emails-- No matter how truthful it sounds, it's almost never true.

Such is the case with this account of President Packer's talk that I received in an email. This morning I called the church offices and spoke personally with President Packer's secretary to ask about the accuracy of this email.

She confirmed that he did, in fact, speak to his ward last week about basic welfare and preparedness principles. But she was alarmed that this person in his ward took notes and wrote down what he said in the HER words, NOT President Packer's.

They have taken up the practice of recording him every time he speaks because this is something that happens often so they always need an accurate record.

One example of an inaccuracy is in the portion of this email where the transcriber states:

"And as judges in Israel, the Bishop will respond. The time for financial largess in our ward activities is over.' [President Packer then turned directly to our Bishop and counseled him that last year's youth trip to Nauvoo, which was, President Packer said, a great opportunity for testimony building and missionary work, will not happen again. Times of/for that sort of expense in the Church are past.]"

In truth, what really happened is that he spoke of some extravagant homes that have been built up around his rather modest one and how the ward might not be able to go to Nauvoo this year, then he turned to the bishop and said that the bishop was the judge in Israel here, and that decision would be up to him.

President Packer's secretary said that the real Meat from President Packer, and the intended message for the world is in last week's General Conference. And that if we really want to know what message he would have us hear, we need to listen to THAT talk, and throw THIS account of his talk away.

Sincerely,

Dennis

Kelly, I can't believe you were getting threatening letters and comments. Whhhaaaa? Why were they doing that? Were they offended by something in the testimony? What on earth could possibly be so offensive about it?

Who bloody cares whether or not he actually wrote it. keep it up and mark it anonymous. People are so stupid. For pete's sake, if it's uplifting and inspiring to you then enjoy it on YOUR blog. It is YOUR blog after all. You aren't writing things for joe blow to give you crap about it. So dumb. Makes me mad when LDS members try to be all self richeous and won't let people enjoy a good thing because they'd rather be right about something. NOONE Cares! Get a life right?! I'm so annoyed for you right now! It wasn't offensive in any way, it was heartwarming and wonderful. Whether Packer said it or Paris Hilton, it was a good thing to have read. People really are bored out of their minds and can't keep their opinions to themselves. This are the people in the church that make people not want to go because they're so "perfect" that we can't possibly compare. The people who can't look at all views, all religions and see wonderful things about it all. So to all who have a problem with your post, get a hobby! Don't rain on someone elses inspirations even if they aren't your own. Threatening email, dumbest thing I've ever heard. Since that's really what our religion and faith believes and condones. Give me a break.

I found your blog when I was trying to do a little research of the accuracy of Elder Packer's remarks. I was forwarded an email from my mother about his testimony. I too was skeptical and uncertain if it was true or not. I'm sorry that you were receiving threatening comments about it when you had it on your blog. I feel that what was said in the remarks (true or not) was really nothing different than what we've been hearing. Just a little more blunt and less sugar coated. I found it both comforting and scary at the same time.

Anyway, sorry to hijack your comments.

Sorry this happened to you Kelly! Silly, silly people. They are so easily inflamed by such trifles. Honestly. It had a good principle about it and that is to be prepared. It's what we've been hearing all along for years! You go chica! And good luck with Aunt Flo :)

It sounds to me like the email/blog of President Packer's testimony was somewhat accurate in what he actually had to say. From what I can tell according to Dennis, there were a few misquoted parts, which would probably happen if someone were taking it down longhand.
As for repercussions felt concerning it, I suspect that a lot of people have difficulty handling/accepting the fact that times will change no matter how much we may not want them to. Maybe they'll get easier, but then again maybe they'll get a whole lot tougher. One sure fact is that they will change. How we accept those changes and how well prepared we are for them depends completely upon ourselves.

I love being your great bra! You know it would've been just fine if someone had said " that's actually not by Pres Packer, but I'm happy that it made you happy." A well rounded, more stable person would have been cool with whatever.... but whatever, not everyone can be your favorite bra, just me!!!
